Returpack recycle metal cans and bottles more effectively with PreCom from PocketMobile

There are around 5 000 recycling stations in Sweden’s grocery stores and every week 35-45 million SEK flow through Returpack’s ERP system. Every beer can and PET bottle recycled in Sweden will sooner or later end up in Returpack’s enormous recycling station in Norrköping, and every year 1,5 billion cans and plastic bottles arrive here to be recycled.

So far the empty plastic bottles has ended up in a box  picked up and delivered by Returpack’s trucks, via various depots, to the recycling station in Norrköping. In the new logistic solution the cans and bottles are fetched in trucks with compressors instead of, as before, fetched in boxes.

To make this more effective and to be able to oversee the transport flow, Returpack is introducing a completely new IT-system and the truck drivers are equipped with hand held computers containing PreCom software from PocketMobile. Returpack also use garbage-trucks look-alike which compress the cans bottles immediately.

When the cans and bottles are picked up from the store, a scanner on the handheld computer read a barcode and reports automatically to the IT-system included in Returpack’s logistic chain.

Returpack achieve increased control of the volumes of cans and bottles and transport distances will be reduced by 50%. The result is reduced costs and less environmental footprint.

- When the IT and logistic system is fully implemented at the end of 2011 we estimate that the number of transportations to Returpack’s recycling station should be reduced by 50% thanks to reduced pick-ups, a higher degree of compression and loading of the trucks. The reduced transportations results in, not only financial advantages but also less impact on the environment than before, says Marie Skoog at Returpack.
